Nathan Lyon shined with a match haul of nine wickets as Australia overcame Sri Lanka easily to win the first Test on Friday before midday. The hosts were knocked out for 113 in their second innings, and the Australians won by a 10-wicket margin in their first over back at the crease in Galle. In the first innings, Travis Head and fellow spinner Nathan Lyon each took four wickets to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 212, forcing the hosts to escape before the morning was out.
Australia’s victory was notable because they had previously lost 3-0 to Sri Lanka on their 2016 tour.
Before the game began, Sri Lanka suffered a setback when Angelo Mathews had to leave due to Covid-19 and was replaced by Oshada Fernando.
The game got off to a quick start thanks to the captain Dimuth Karunaratne. hitting four long balls in Mitchell Starc’s first over, which led to the scoring of 17 runs.
But things swiftly turned around when Nathan Lyon and fellow spinner Mitchell Swepson took charge.
Nathan Lyon trapped captain Karunaratne behind for 23 after just 20 balls, and Swepson lbw’d Pathum Nissanka for 14.
In the 12th over, the leg-spinner caught Oshada, dropping Sri Lanka to 63-4.
The wickets kept tumbling as Sri Lanka’s batsmen frantically tried to use their bats to get out of trouble.
Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva were taken out in Head’s first over, a left-handed hitter who also occasionally bowls off-spin.
Ramesh Mendis gave himself four balls to seal the victory with a four and a six. David Warner, a dashing opener, made the formalities easy.
Australia’s final two first-inning wickets were taken by the quick bowler Asitha Fernando earlier in the day as the visitors added eight more wickets to their overnight total of 313, giving them a commanding lead of 109.
In Australia’s first innings, Usman Khawaja (71) and Cameron Green (77) stood out as the top batsmen.
Ramesh Mendis took four wickets, while Jeffrey Vandersay took two in his debut.
The third day began early after bad weather shortened play on Thursday and caused a spectator stand to collapse due to strong gusts.
The second and final Test will begin there on July 8.
